UW to Host Transatlantic Symposium Oct. 8

Laramie (UW) -- Angelos Pangratis, the deputy head of delegation for the European Union (EU), will be one of four keynote speakers at a Transatlantic Symposium Wednesday, Oct., 8 at the University of Wyoming.

The symposium, titled "EU-US Relations: When the Stars Align -- Benign or Malign? Can the United States and the European Union Together Lead the World?," begins at noon in the family room of the Wyoming Union. The event is free and open to the public. The first 30 people will receive a brown bag lunch.

Pangratis is the senior career official serving at the Delegation of the European Commission in Washington, D.C. He is the former ambassador and head for the European Commission's Delegation to Argentina (2003-05) and also served at senior functions in the Delegations of the European Commission in South Africa (1995-97) and South Korea (1990-94).

Pangratis will be joined at the symposium by Julian Evans, general consul for the United Kingdom; Paul Luif, senior fellow of the Austrian Institute for International Affairs; and Andrew Denison, director of Transatlantic Networks in Germany.

The topics of discussion will include the U.S. presidential election, the U.S. economic crisis, climate change, the Russian invasion of Georgia and U.S. and EU coordination in the United Nations.

The symposium is sponsored by the Milward Simpson Fund, UW International Programs and the UW Department of Political Science.
